Addendum 1: That muṣaffiḥa is listed with the same meaning in Freytag’s Lexicon is the result of a misreading of the words wa-yurwā bi-kasr al-fāɔ, which belong to the following phrase, where the word is explained as “women clapping their hands”. If Freytag had not expressly refered to Jawharī, he could have turned to Fīrūzabādī, which only has wa-yuksar (see Lane).

Addendum 2: The same double comparison as in the verse by Labīd is found in the following line in the same metre by cAdī ibn Zayd [fl. second half 6th c.] (Iṣfahānī, II.24, 3 from the bottom):

“Mashrafī swords shine on their tips – or rather/

it may be shiny new linen//”
